Walkersville Wins State Championship!
The Walkersville Lions triumphed 33-6 over the Elkton Golden Elks to win the Maryland State 2A Championship and finish 2016 with a perfect record of 14-0. Saturday’s game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis closed out a record season for the Lions.
Back at Walkersville High School for a Homecoming Victory Celebration, Coach Joe Polce said, “This is the best team to ever play football for Walkersville High School.” The team began forty years ago, and this was their first perfect season. This is the second championship for Walkersville High School. The first championship was in 1987. In 2015, the team came close, but lost the championship game 21-20 against Patuxent High School.
This year, the championship game got off to a shaky start. Elkton scored a touchdown in the first quarter, but Walkersville responded with their own touchdown in the second quarter. Neither team secured an extra point or a two-point conversion as attempted. At half-time, the game remained tied.
When the Lions returned to the field, they dominated the field. They scored four more touchdowns and only missed one extra point attempt. The Lions defense kept the Elks out of scoring territory and forced turn-overs. At the two-minute warning, the Lions just let the time run down on the clock.
After a short celebration in Annapolis, the Walkersville Lions received a victor’s welcome with police, fire, and rescue equipment escorting them up MD 194 and down Frederick Street to the high school. Back at home, the community waited in the stands to cheer their athletes. The stadium was lit and the scoreboard showed the scores from Annapolis. As the team filed out of their buses, the crowd erupted with exultation and the young men relished their victory.
