New Managers of Community Thrift Shop

MaryAnne Schouw and Mel Palmer have graciously volunteered as the new co-managers of the Glade Valley Community Services‘ Community Thrift Shop. They take over management after long-time managers Kathy and Barry Maronis retired recently. Mel has lived in Walkersville for the past 25 years and recently retired from the National Institute of Health. She has been volunteering for the community for many years- Food Bank, GVAA cheerleading coach, vacation bible school, and is active in her church’s programs. Shed Fire Closes Lanes and Roads

A shed fire behind the farm house at 8516 Woodsboro Pike closed lanes of Maryland 194, Fountain Rock Road, and was quickly followed by an accident at Maryland 194 and Stauffer Road Monday evening. Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company and Walkersville Volunteer Rescue Company responded with lots of equipment. Explosions were reported from within the burning shed, and black smoke could be seen from U.S. 15. According to fire fighters, the shed was filled with wood and a wood splitter. The Town of Walkersville’s Burgess, Town Commissioners, Economic Development Commission, and Planning Commission quickly began discussions about blighted commercial properties over the past several weeks. Since GladeValley.net published articles highlighting the extent of problems on commercial properties in town, one property owner appears to be joining town officials in addressing some of the problems. Recently, Walkers Village Center’s long-vacant “Medical Center” had its windows blocked with craft paper. The units were filled with black mold and moisture clung to the windows and doors. Emergency Equipment On Display

The Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company hosted Atlantic Emergency Solutions and other vendors on Saturday. The event featured a lot of new equipment from Atlantic Emergency Solutions including fire trucks and ambulances. Other vendors displayed helmets, boots, hoses, cameras, and nozzles for hoses. One vendor demonstrated their battery powered jaws of life and traditionally powered jaws of life. They used their equipment to cut a small car apart.
