Excitement and Rapt Attention Mark First Day

Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) opened all 66 schools on schedule today, the first day of the 2015-2016 school year. With nearly 30,000 students eligible to ride buses, FCPS drivers all reported safe travels this morning. Transportation Director Fred Punturiero was pleased with a 97 percent on-time bus arrival rate. He said there are always some delays as bus drivers and students meet and make adjustments the first few weeks of school. He expects all will soon settle in to comfortable routines. Maryland State Police were called to Old Town Walkersville on Sunday to investigate a break-in on West Pennsylvania Avenue. A first floor bathroom window was opened, and suspects are believed to have gained entry from that point. A neighbor feared the break-in may be tied to on-going drug abuse and sales around Five Corners. “We sit and watch drug sales from our front porches,” several neighbors confided. “I don’t understand why these things continue. Accident at Monocacy River on MD 26

On August 19, 2015 at 5:43 p.m., units from Walkersville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Companies were dispatched for a vehicle accident at MD 26 and the Monocacy River. Rescue Squad 24 arrived on the scene and advised Frederick County Emergency Communications Center that three vehicles were in the east-bound lane with one patient still in a car. Engine 111 arrived on the scene shortly after and blocked traffic. Crews from both companies worked to control leaking fluids. Ambulance 249 arrived on the scene to start patient care. Accident at Crum Road and 194

At 7:12 p.m. on August 20, 2015, units from Walkersville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Companies were dispatched for a vehicle accident at MD 194 and Crum Road. Before units were on their way, Frederick County Emergency Communications Center dispatched a medic unit for one patient with chest pain. Chief 24 arrived on the scene to find a two vehicle collision with one patient still in a car. Both cars were still in the road way. Vandalism Costs More Than Aesthetics

The staff at the Walkersville Pharmacy arrived at work earlier this week to find the Coke machine in front of the pharmacy on its side and its power cord ripped out of the wall. This was the second time in about a month. A previous machine was bolted to the ground after vandals kept damaging the machine. The machine is owned by Coca-Cola, who told the pharmacy that the machine will probably not be replaced. “They can’t afford to keep fixing and replacing machines,” a pharmacy employee explained.
