Walkersville High School’s girls’ swimming team won their first county swim meet on Saturday February 6, 2016. They hope to use this win as a springboard into a state championship.

After last years tough defeat by only three points from the Oakdale Bears, the Lions knew they had to give it their all if they wanted this win.

Sophomore Abby Engle said “Winning was really cool because I knew that last year the team tried their best to beat Oakdale; it was really close but they weren’t able to win. This year we did it and it was an awesome feeling.”

The girls were lead by Senior captains Julia Wadding and Justine Wantz. Wadding won the 200 free and 500 free and Wantz won the 100 free. Both girls gave the Lions several crucial points that helped them in their victory.

Wadding said “It was an awesome feeling to win because we kind of felt redeemed from what happened last year at counties.”

The seniors were especially thrilled over this win, knowing it would be their last county swim meet ever.

Senior Ciera Schultz said “ It was honestly one of the best experiences,” when asked about the victory. Schultz added “It brought me more than a personal happiness. Hearing them call our team name made me extremely proud of all of us because I know that we’ve been working two years for this, so the intense happiness that I felt will be something I’m never going to forget.”

This team has been on the rise for the last couple years and this win has proven that they’re a team that other schools have to pay attention to as the state meet approaches.
