Walkersville Boys B-Ball Loses to Tough Tuscarora Squad, But Feel Poised To Have a Strong Second Half of Season

by Wolfgang Sonne

On Tuesday the Walkersville Lions varsity boys basketball team took on a 13-1 offensive powerhouse in the Tuscarora Titans, and lost 61 – 45.

The feeling surrounding this year’s boy’s team has been positive and has had an outlook that this year might be the year the Lions are back to being a competitive and tightly knit group. Although this year has been an upswing in play under new head coach Mike Mathis, Walkerville’s window might be closing due to the grade levels of key piece player’s like senior Kyle Daggett.

Daggett is the team’s leading scorer averaging almost 18 points per game and has been quick to perfect his skill set. He’s rather quick for someone with his 6’6 build. Daggett believes there is still lot’s of potential in this year’s team and sees many things to build on even after a loss.

After the game Daggett stated, “I thought our energy was great; we knew they were the better team but we played with a lot of effort and that kept us in the game.” Looking forward to future matchups Daggett said, “If we play that way against other opponents then we will be in a really good spot. We need to work on our offensive efficiency moving forward; right now we don’t have a whole lot of scoring which could be the reason we are in a slump.” Daggett continued to torment opposing defenses as he dropped in a cool 17 points to go along with his 4 rebounds.

When asked about one positive thing the boys could take away from the game Junior Zack Mathis said, “We showed some resiliency when we got down early and continued to play hard. Our half court defense was pretty good as well.”

Senior Josh Boards thinks there are things that the team could improve on despite playing a hard game. He said “We just need to limit some of our turnovers and mistakes we make early in the game. We also need to play with a lot of intensity, energy, and heart.”

Look for Walkersville to get out of this losing slump and improve from their 5-8 record.
