Summer Lunch Program Needs Volunteers
The Summer Outreach of Walkersville Area Churches (SOWAC) will be kicking off its seventh summer of providing food and fun activities daily at Discovery Community Center and Creamery Park on Monday, June 22, 2015.
The program offers a healthy lunch and good adult supervision to youth aged 18 years and younger. Program volunteers will help youth enjoy games and crafts each day.
From 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. each day, Discovery Community Center will host the program. This program will run through August 14, 2015.
From 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m. each day, Creamery Park will host the program. This program location only has enough support to run through July 24, 2015. If enough organizations commit to supporting it, the Creamery Park location may be able to run until August 14, 2015.
Volunteers and organizations are needed to keep the Creamery Park lunch site open between July 27 and August 14, 2015. The main responsibilities for the volunteer organizations are to help serve lunch and supervise activities for the week or weeks they will cover.
SOWAC also requests volunteers to bring a specific activity to share with the children for one day or multiple days. Last summer, volunteers offered art lessons, dance activities, sports activities, beekeeping demonstrations, and face painting.
This program is made possible through the volunteer efforts of people from area churches and organizations in the Walkersville area. Most of the food will be provided by the Frederick Community Action Agency. Glade Valley Community Services provides funds for any additional food needed, crafts, games, and other supplies. The Walkersville Library provides support by reading to the children one day each week.
