The Walkersville Lions football team won Friday night in dominant fashion, beating Frederick 64-0 and posting their sixth shutout of the season.

While 64-0 looks bad enough, it still does not show how lopsided this game was. It was barely a football game in the first half. The Lions got the ball to start and drove 60 yards in two plays, with junior Tyler Gleason scoring from 40 yards out on the second play from scrimmage. After a Frederick punt Walkersville found itself on the Frederick 34 yard line and three plays later junior Jacob Wetzel strolled into the endzone from 20 yards out.

Just over two minutes into the game it was apparent that Frederick had no hope against the dominant Walkersville team, and it would actually much worse as the game went on. On the next Frederick possession they once again went three-and-out and punted deep in their own territory. The snap took awhile to get there and junior Ty Littleton blocked the punt and landed on it in the endzone for a touchdown.

The next drive senior defensive end Kyle Daggett sacked senior Cadet quarterback Daniel Gray and ran it back for another touchdown. The Frederick Cadets got the ball back for their third straight drive and got to midfield, but Gray’s pass was intercepted and returned to the ten yard line by junior Jacob Wetzel. The next play quarterback Billy Gant threw a wide-open touchdown pass to Daggett to stretch the lead to 35-0.

The next kickoff was fumbled by Frederick and they recovered the ball at the two-yard line. Three plays later senior running back Ves Williams fumbled the ball in the end zone, which was then recovered by Walkersville for another touchdown. It was still the first quarter and the score was 42-0 despite Walkersville having run only six offensive plays. With a minute left in the first quarter Gant threw a touchdown pass to Wetzel to make the score 49-0 in the first quarter. Junior student Kyle Wilkinson said, “Well, our team played a lot harder this week than they did against Brunswick. That really showed when we scored all those points in the first quarter. Frederick is better than Brunswick and we scored more points. The reason was our effort.”

The second quarter started with Gant throwing an interception, but Walkersville soon got a safety when Gray ran out of his own end zone. The ensuing free kick left the ball at the Frederick 31 yard-line, and junior Christian Policelli scored a touchdown on the next play. 14 minutes into the game it was 58-0, and Walkersville finally let off the gas at this point.

The backups came into the game at this point. Frederick continued to sputter on offense and a run by Walkersville junior backup quarterback Zack Mathis sen up a touchdown run by senior Alka Matamba with four minutes left in the first half. The next drive Gray had a pass intercepted by senior CJ Barndollar at the Frederick 20-yard line. Rather than go up by 70 points on Frederick’s senior night, the Lions opted to kneel four times and go into halftime with a 64-0 lead. Junior right guard Rowan Bennett said, “It was a great all-around effort by everyone on our team.”

The second half was mostly a formality. With the game over both teams ran out the clock and moved onto the last game of the season. While the 1-8 Cadets are not playing for much at this point in the season, the 9-0 Lions will play the Middletown Knights in a matchup of the two best teams in the 2A West. The rivalry game is always competitive and tense and next week is sure to be no different, especially with Middletown easily dispatching the Oakdale Bears this week. Coming into this tough matchup, junior wide receiver Josh Polce said, “We’ve had a few strong performances in a row and hope to keep the momentum going into next week. We need to have a good week of practice and we’ll be ready.”
