Despite her amazing win against Dominika Cibulkova in the first round, Catherine Bellis lost to Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan at the U.S Open on Thursday.
While most fifteen years olds were beginning their first week of school, Bellis was shocking the nation on the courts at the U.S Open. Surprising many, she won against Cibulkova who has speed, clean strokes, and some of the strongest legs in the Open.
Bellis’s consistency and wit wasn’t enough to beat Diyas in the second round. She lost the first set 6-3, won the second set 0-6, and lost the third set 6-2. Because she is an amateur, she can’t collect the $60,000 prize money, but she says she will definitely stay an amateur right now “to keep my options open for college, in case an injury or something happens, but I’d love to be a pro one day.”
Bellis says that she loves that she had the chance to experience the Open and will continue to play tennis.
