WHS Student’s Home Invaded by a Deer — Read What Happened Next!

WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

Mills Custom Wood Floors

by Caleb Engle for Walkersville High School Lion’s Pride

Yesterday, while enjoying a bowl of Cheerios, senior Ryan Manchester was startled to find a deer break into his house (video below). After several phone calls with 911 and animal control, in both self and home defense, he shot the deer twice.

WHS Lion’s Pride: When did this take place?

Manchester: Yesterday at around 1:30pm. I was in my kitchen, eating cereal. I heard it plowing through my front door.

WHSLP: What kind of deer was it? What was the deer doing?

RM: I’m pretty sure it was a whitetail deer. I think it smelled the female deer pee on my new Christmas tree. It stayed around the tree the most of the time it was there.

WHSLP: What was going through your mind when you realized a deer had broken into your house?

RM: I was thinking, ‘oh my god, there’s a seven point buck in my house.’

WHSLP: Were you scared when the deer was in the house with you?

RM: I was actually relieved because at first, I thought a person was breaking into my house. When I realized it was a deer, it was a bit of a relief.

WHSLP: At what point did you realize you needed to call 911?

RM: I knew I was going to have to call 911 once the deer started [freaking] out near my Christmas tree.

WHSLP: What did the 911 operators say?

RM: They said to stay put and they were going to send animal control over.

WHSLP: When did you decide to shoot the deer?

RM: I know how long 911 response is, so I knew I was going to have to do something. As I was getting the gun ready, animal control said they were going to be about 15 minutes, so I knew then for sure that I was going to have to shoot it. I shot it with a 9mm Smith & Wesson.

WHSLP: What happened after you shot the deer?

RM: It died. I shot it in the head, and it didn’t die right away, so I shot it again right around the shoulder.

WHSLP: Who showed up first?

RM: Police and animal control showed up at pretty much the same time, a few minutes after I shot it.

WHSLP: What did the police say when they showed up?

RM: They were asking me questions about what happened, they made sure my handgun was properly registered, which it was. They were just awestruck like everyone else. They told me that I did the right thing, and absolutely did nothing wrong.

WHSLP: What was your parent’s response to this? Your peers? Has there been any negative feedback?

RM: My parents were the same, awestruck. They were glad that I did what I did. Everyone was really just like, ‘what just happened.’ All of my friends have been like, ‘Oh my god, how does that happen,’ and ‘that’s unreal.’ I have had people, especially on twitter telling me things like, you killed an animal, you should not be proud of that.

WHSLP: How have you responded to negative feedback?

RM: I just told them that any animal that comes into my house and messes everything up like that is not leaving alive.

WHSLP: What did you do after things were cleared up with law enforcement? What plans do you have for the deer now?

RM: I called DNR (Department of Natural Resources) to bring me a tag for it, we gutted it, put it on ice, and brought it up to a butcher. I plan on getting it mounted. A full shoulder mount.

WHSLP: Would you advise others to do the same in your situation?

RM: Only if they have the proper training and skills to shoot a gun. You can not miss in that situation. Dearbought is a populated area, so I made sure I was precise and accurate.

Through quick thinking and proper training, Manchester was able to diffuse a completely unexpected situation. Although gruesome, Manchester’s actions likely saved himself and his home from possible damages. Unthinkable as it is, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, be sure to call animal control and/or the police first, and only use a firearm if you have the proper training to do so in a safe manner.
