On Friday, February 19th, Walkersville High School dedicated the Dual Enrollment Collegiate Commons to Charlie Nicodemus. The room will now be aptly called the Nicodemus Collegiate Commons.

The space is designed specifically for WHS students taking Dual Enrollment classes with Frederick Community College and AP Classes to study, learn, create, and grow as students. Nicodemus’ contributions helped to finance the renovation of the room as well as decorate it and supply chromebooks.

Nicodemus is part of a long-time Walkersville family, and this dedication is just one way to thank him for all of his and his wife Katherine’s generosity toward the community and schools.

The ceremony opened with a speech from senior Chris Copen. Copen had it right when he said, “It is because of community icons like Mr. and Mrs. Nicodemus students have opportunities like the ones celebrated tonight.” Without the time and funds donated by the Nicodemus family, the chance to have a space to truly learn and prepare for the future would not have been possible.

Then senior Brooke Shortt spoke about her experience with Dual Enrollment. Shortt said, “The Nicodemus Collegiate Commons was always a great space to reflect on my work and receive feedback…Mr. Nicodemus is truly a role model for all of us. Having people like him in the town opens more opportunities for kids to improve.”

When Nicodemus spoke, he delivered his words with great charisma; it’s no wonder that the town of Walkersville is glad to have him support students. Nicodemus said, “Being a lifelong resident of Walkersville, I support Walkersville everywhere I go…when she [principal Tracey Franklin] gave me the opportunity to think about this, it didn’t take long to say yes. Anything that can promote this school I’m in favor of.”

The night was an energetic one with students, professors, and parents, all there to celebrate the Nicodemus family. It was clear that students were truly thankful to them, and that the donations were graciously accepted by all. Because of Nicodemus, Walkersville students have another unique chance to flourish in schoolwork, advance in their studies, and achieve their dreams.
