The Town of Walkerville’s Planning Commission will hold a Workshop on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. in Walkersville’s Town Hall. The Planning Commission will discuss a Revised Site Plan proposed by Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) for building a new Rock Creek School on the Walkersville Middle School property.
The Planning Commission had been scheduled to hold a public hearing on the site plan on March 26, 2019. That morning, FCPS asked to remove the plan from the public hearing and instead have a workshop with the Planning Commission.
The latest Revised Site Plan features a retaining wall along the property line with homes in Glade Village and a large cement culvert along the property line with the new Mill Run community. The revisions came in response to concerns about storm water management and the flow of water across the property.
Other changes include parking and traffic patterns. Most notably, FCPS plans to close access to their property from Maryland Avenue. The rear parking lots at the middle school would be accessed from a new drive off of the existing entrance on Frederick Street. The new drive would also serve as a drop-off/pick-up queue for car riders.
Some members of the Planning Commission raised concerns about plans to remove well-established trees on the property, a drastic reduction in the parking for the middle school, the elimination of a new path from Mill Run to the school, and the reduction in outdoor recreation facilities on the property.
The Planning Commission Workshop is open to the public, but public input is not permitted. No votes take place during a Workshop. Public may listen and provide feedback during a Public Hearing, scheduled for April 23, 2019.
