Walkersville Middle Librarian One of 25 Nominees for Maryland School Librarian of the Year
The Maryland Association of School Librarians (MASL) recently announced the 25 nominees for the 2017 Maryland School Librarian of the Year award. Seven are from Frederick County Public Schools. They are: Ann Duncan, Walkersville Middle; Laura Hicks, Frederick High; Emily Nauman, Monocacy Elementary; Brittany Nuse, Valley Elementary; Maria O’Toole, Carroll Manor Elementary; Renate Owen, Oakdale High; and Jennifer Shesman, Thurmont Middle. The MASL will announce the winner at its May 4 conference.
All nominees are current MASL members, Certified School Librarians, and actively serving as a school librarian in Maryland in the same role for three or more years.
In early February, the selection committee will name five finalists. The selection committee is comprised of representatives from MASL, the Maryland State Department of Education, McDaniel College, Towson University and University of Maryland College Park. The committee will evaluate the nominees based on the extent to which they exemplify the five roles–administrator, leader, information specialist, teacher and instructional partner–of a library media specialist as set forth in American Association of School Librarians’ Standards for the 21st Century Learner.

MASL is dedicated to the improvement of teaching and learning in Maryland by bringing together individuals who are engaged in the field of school library media and information studies. MASL works toward developing a lifelong love of reading, developing skills and promoting excellence in media production among students, and promoting and providing for members’ professional development. In addition, MASL encourages dissemination and sharing of ideas, programs and materials among members through conferences, publications, and other media, and encourages implementation of state and national standards and guidelines for school library media programs.
