The Walkersville High School football team has started their season off on two great successes for the team, following two wins against Tuscarora away and the home opener against Liberty. The latest win was a twenty-seven to seven success with junior quarterback Andrew Stroka leading the charge.
After going down early the Lions roared back, Stroka said, “We were very confident in ourselves after being down because we are a very tight knit group and we trust each other to make plays.” Stroka also added that, “After they scored we knew there was still a lot of time left so, I do not think anyone was worried or upset after they scored.”
Stroka threw for three touchdowns as the team cruised to the victory against the visiting Liberty Lions. Senior wide receivers Jake Hess and Brett Ahalt combined for three touchdown receptions. Senior running back Nick Edwards scored the final touchdown with around six minutes to go in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Walkersville Lions.
Walkserville was able to provide a fairly balanced offensive attack with a consistent mix of pass plays and run plays to keep Liberty guessing. A balanced running attack of Mark Merica, Josiah Jones, Nick Edwards, and new transfer to Walkersville High, Josue Longa.
The defense of Walkersville showed their might as they did not allow any points to be scored on them. They stifled any sort of momentum that Liberty was trying to use to their advantage. Defensive tackle Alus Mbella acknowledged the teams successful defense:“I feel like we performed very well we held [Liberty] to about one hundred yards.” Junior Alus Mbella also recorded two key sacks against a Liberty quarterback who was the Carroll County offensive player of the year last season.
Walkersville Football faces their next challenge in the form of visiting Seneca Valley. The game is Friday the twentieth and the support from all students is greatly appreciated as the team goes for their third win on the season.
