School Supplies Distributed

Recognizing that the cost of school supplies can be prohibitive for some families, Glade Valley Community Services, Inc. conducts a school supply distribution each year to help students get a jump start on the school year. A lack of supplies can be a contributing factor to a poor attitude and poor grades in school.

School supplies were distributed on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at the Glade Valley Food Bank. School supplies from the list provided by each school plus a backpack were distributed to 166 students, from 67 families, who attend the Walkersville High School feeder schools. In addition, seven Walkersville students attending specialized classes at other schools also received school supplies. There were lots of smiles that day from students and parents.

Remaining school supplies were distributed to the Walkersville schools (Walkersville Elementary, Glade Elementary, Walkersville Middle School, Walkersville High School) and Walkersville feeder schools (New Midway Elementary, Woodsboro Elementary) and Thurmont Schools (Primary, Elementary, Middle) for use by the guidance counselors to assist other students in need of supplies. Distribution of the remaining supplies occurred the week of August 17, 2015

The supplies were sorted, setup and prepackaged at the Food Bank on Friday, August 7th and Saturday, August 8th. Helping with setup were Donna Swanson, Don Boos, Bob and Kathy Fenimore, Amy Queen, Jim Mullins, Russell Royston, Bob Thornton, and Dave and Brenda Teach. Helping with distribution Sunday, August 9th, were Kathy Fenimore, Kristen Spear, Brittany Blood, Jim Mullins, Brenda Teach, Floyd and Donna Swanson, Russell Royston, and Don Boos.

Thank you to the committee members, led by Don Boos and Ann Wadding, and to all the volunteers who worked on this project.

Thank you to all who donated supplies, gift cards and money so these students could get a good start on the school year by being prepared and having all the required supplies. The following organizations collected supplies and donations from their members and employees: Community of Christ Church, Walkersville United Methodist Church, Calvary Assembly of God, St. Timothy Catholic Church, Galaxy Controls, Glade United Church of Christ, Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, Mom’s Club, Lonza, Johnsville United Methodist Church, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
