Day two of the Regional Track Meet might have just been better than day one. At the end of it all the Walkersville girl’s  track team finished first in Regionals. The Boy’s team was also successful as senior Justin Herman qualified for states in the 400 meter dash, and the Boys’ 4X100 team are also going to states. “I feel like we are a very strong team because of how well we work together,” said senior Ari Biggus.

The day started off a little shaky as Walkersville could not get a break. Senior Emma Crouch accidentally false started on her 100 meter dash and was disqualified, but she definitely made it up as she qualified for states for the 200 meter dash and she also anchored home the Girls’ 4X100 relay team first place at Regionals.

Senior Collin Hess also qualified for states in the 110 meter hurdles as he came in second place at Regionals. However Hess could not make the magic happen in the 300 meter hurdles as he finished in fifth place, one away from going to states.

Senior Donavon Key also had a good performance in day two, where he finished 7th place in the 100 meter dash against some of the fastest runners in the 2A conference. Key also put on a show with the 4X100 relay, which the relay team placed second at Regionals and will advance to states.

“I feel that we performed pretty well. A lot of people pushed themselves to get to states and nationals. My favorite part was the sprinters because there were some really fast people there. I’m looking forward to watching high jump because I think Collin has a chance to win again,” said senior Garrett Allen.

Junior Autumn Parson might have to be the MVP of day 2 at Regionals. Parson finished first in the Girls’ 200 meter dash, and will run again at states. Parson also finished second in the 400 meter dash, and will also being running that race again at states. She also helped the girl’s 4X100 relay team reach first. However, after the race Parson seemed to injure her hamstring, but it looks like she’ll still be able to race.

“The team throughout the season has most definitely showed major progression. I feel like the girls were able to go out there with a competitive mindset, accomplish new goals, and exceed those goals. Coming up this week at states, I’m just looking forward to watching the team place their mark on the state of Maryland! Sure we are hoping to make as big of an impact as we did in our region, and looking for new personal records, but I want to see the girls go out on the track and have fun because they have surely earned it,” said Parson.

“They’ve been taught by the coaches everything they need to be successful, now they just have to trust themselves. My favorite part of the regional meet, as my accomplishment was definitely winning the 200, stepping into the blocks my nerves were getting to me and I think that it affected my start a little bit, but I’m happy that I was able to get the victory coming down the home stretch. My favorite part of the meet for the team was cheering for the girls as they ran their events, especially the freshman on our team Megan, she runs distance and is what keeps the events exciting for me, she has a drive that allows her to pass athlete after the next, there’s no telling what she’s going to accomplish as she gains experience,” continued Parson.

Senior Kelcie Robertson and Herman definitely were real leaders out there. Both showed that it takes everything in order to make it. Herman not only made states for 400 meter dash, but also made it for the 200 meter dash. Herman will be competing in four events at states. Robertson really showed that she is the best girl’s pole vaulter at Regionals as she jumped 11’2, which was a whole foot higher than second and third place.

“I feel like everyone went out and gave it their all and it paid off. There was a lot of people that placed and pr’d and it was awesome to see everyone doing well knowing how hard we practice. I’m looking forward to watching the relays because I think we have a good shot at placing and maybe even winning those races. My favorite part was watching the four by four team at the end of the meet because we all knew if they beat a certain team then we would win the meet. So that was really exciting to watch,” said Robertson.

At the end of the meet, you could say that it was a success. The girls walked away as number one in Regionals, and that many Walkersville track members are moving onto states. States will be on May 25th and May 27th.
