Motorists Urged to Remain Cautious As Heavy Rains May Close County Roads

Frederick County officials urge motorists to use caution when they head home on their commute Thursday.  According to the National Weather Service, portions of the county could receive ½ inch, or as much as 2-4 inches, of rain in a short period of time if there are multiple thunderstorms.  Heavy rainfall in a short amount of time can result in rapid rises in streams, creeks and urban areas.  Such heavy rain may strand motorists and close some county-maintained roads because of flooding, debris or sinkholes.  A list of road closures can be found online at www.frederickcountymd.gov/roadsclosed

Additional rain is forecast over the next several days, so residents should remain vigilant. Saturated soils can lead to sinkholes, downed trees and other hazards. When motorists encounter water on the roadway, they should remember to “turn around, don’t drown.”

County Executive Jan Gardner encourages residents to receive emergency information from the Frederick County notification system at www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/ALERT.
