This year at Walkersville High School, a lot of sports have gotten much attention. Having cross country be county champions and state finalists along with football being county and regional champs and also state finalists, sports have gotten a lot of hype. Typically when winter sports rolls around the highlight is always on basketball, but here at Walkersville we have a swim team that is very hungry for success.

Currently the girls swim team is undefeated and going strong with some great wins in the season. Claire Owen, a three year varsity swimmer, said “our team is a lot bigger this year which gives us an advantage, also most of the swimmers also swim on club teams which makes them way better, and most of all we practice very hard and all the time; we have practices at 5am before school every Wednesday.” Owen, a huge asset to the team, believes they will go far this year and remain undefeated.

The boys swim team is doing just as well. Standing at 5-1 the Lions have had an outstanding season so far. “The coaching staff pushing us really hard this year has made us a lot better, our team chemistry is very good,” Senior Captain Lino Aguilar Barron stated. Also the other senior captain had some things to say “5-1 is a great improvement from last year, the way were looking I see no reason we don’t end up 7-2, better coaching and more experienced swimmers have helped us get to where we are,”  said TJ Metcalfe.

On top of all of this one of the swimming coaches Sara Franciscovich was nominated for the Buffalo Wild Wings coach of the month by fellow coach Kevin Conley and won. She is featured on the Buffalo Wild Wings website.
