Girls B-Ball Team Dominates Middletown to Move to 20 and 1

by Alec Parker

Walkersville Girls Basketball once again beats Middletown. This time they spoiled Middletown Girls senior night. The Girls Basketball team just completely dominated the whole game, not trailing at any point of the game. The final score was 59-37 Walkersville, and the girls move to 20-1.

In the first quarter, Walkersville took an early lead and scored some easy transition baskets. In the first, it was the junior Rian Wright, and sophomore Julie Wallace that took the charge early. The defense was also on point not letting Middletown score in the first three minutes. The first quarter was Walkersville’s and the second was no different.

The second quarter was just the same, Walkersville continued the easy dominance by getting offensive rebounds, stealing the ball, and hustling on every play. Eve Bernardoni started to show why she is the future of Walkersville girls’ basketball. Bernardoni just blocked multiple shots on the defensive end, and created opportunities for herself, and other teammates on the offense. Going into half the Lions were up 27-12. “They were dominating from the start. They just need to stay in the same rhythm, and continue this momentum into the playoffs,” said junior Josh Polce.

After the halftime performance, the game started back up, and just like the first half the Lions just kept on rolling and didn’t look back. The offense was more intriguing in the second. The Lions, and Knights both came out scoring multiple baskets back and forth until the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, the tension started to heat up. The Knights were trying to mount a late comeback, and Walkersville was trying to hold down the paint. A lot of fouls were called, and some coaches were unhappy with some fouls. Then a little mishap. The Lions called a timeout, and after the timeout, the Knights were given the ball. Coaches were upset, and a stoppage of play happened. After a brief break, the game resumed and Walkersville just continued scoring and playing some great perimeter defense. At the end, Walkersville won by 22 and spoiled what Middletown was hoping to be a great senior night.

Junior Rian Wright at the end scored a career-high 17 points, and made three 3 pointers, and played some great transition offense. “I think it’s pretty nice and I scored most of my points in transition. It felt really good to score a career-high 17 points,” said Wright. Wright continued “We did really well as a team. I thought we distributed the ball, and I’m looking forward to Frederick, and prove that Walkersville is a great basketball team.”

Sophomore Eve Bernardoni was second on the team in scoring with 12. “We played well, and everyone contributed, and we hit a lot of shots,” said Eve Bernardoni. Bernardoni continued “Winning the whole thing, and making to states is what I’m looking forward to the most.”

Even some JV players had some comments on the varsity performance. “I think they played some awesome defense. Honestly, it was embarrassing for Middletown. To beat on a senior night, that’s just sad. Plus Walkersville just easily drove to the basket and made their baskets,” said sophomore Emily Pezenosky.

Overall Walkersville Girls Lions basketball team just played off the charts. They are definitely ready for the playoffs and are looking forward to their next game against Francis Scott Key on February 17 at 7 pm at Walkersville High School.
