Fraud Alert
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple fraud calls today for similar frauds/scams. Several victims reported that an individual called claiming to have been in an accident with someone related to them or a friend.
In one case the scammer told the victim that a friend had backed into their car, and that a child had been injured. The scammer further told the victim that money was needed to cover the child’s medical injuries.
In another incident the scammer told the victim that they had been in an accident with the victim’s wife, and that the wife would be held hostage until the victim paid $3,000 for damages stemming from the crash. In other similar fraud calls the scammer claimed an accident happened in the area of Crestwood Boulevard in Frederick.
The victims reported the scammer called from the phone number 240-357-2565. They also reported the caller was a male with a strong Middle Eastern accent.
The Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens to be on the alert for telemarketing scams and to report suspicious activity immediately to their local law enforcement agency. Additionally, never provide anyone with personal information such as bank accounts, pin numbers or Social Security numbers over the phone.
