Class of 2019 Enter Walkersville, Excited, Scared and Nervous

WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

Local, Award-Winning Country Music from Mike Kuster

As an upperclassman, the scariest part of the first day of school is navigating the school parking lot at the end of the day. For freshman, it’s a completely different story.

The transition from 8th to 9th grade can be scary for anyone, new school, new people, and terrifying upperclassmen. As an upperclassman I can say that we really aren’t as scary as we look, but the first day is still intimidating for everyone. On August 24th, I witnessed the freshman as they roamed the halls with their maps in hand and their backpacks filled.

At lunchtime, after students were settled into their lunch tables, I asked some of the new 9th graders how their day was going so far. While many of them were too nervous to answer any questions, these were some of the answers I was given.

Riley Brown said “I was most nervous to get lost in the hallway, but my day is good so far. I like Gym and Spanish 3.”

Grace Boroughs said, “I was nervous to have classes with upper classmen, but so far my day has been better than I expected. I am most excited to do lacrosse and theatre.”

Morgan Brown agreed with Boroughs when she said she was also “most nervous to have classes with upperclassmen, they are kind of scary.” She also stated that she is most excited for “football games and the homecoming dance!”

While most reactions were good, some of the students weren’t as excited about the first day. Claire Lynch said, “I was really nervous because I really don’t like school.  I’m ready for it to be over, but I do enjoy my French 2 class.”

With mixed emotions, the freshmen were both excited and nervous to finally start high school. These were feelings all students had on the first day, but it sounds like it was a successful day for everyone. Welcome to Walkersville, Class of 2019!
