Boys Basketball Cruises Easily By Brunswick As It Readies for a Strong Stretch Run to the Playoffs

by Emma Bernardoni

The Walkersville Lions Varsity boys basketball team cruised to an impressive 71-43 road victory over Brunswick on Tuesday night.

The Lions were led in scoring by senior Kyle Daggett and junior Jerimiah Sweet who both put up 12 points. Sweet also grabbed ten rebounds for the double-double.

“We had great energy from beginning to end. It was 24-2 at the end of the first quarter, and then 33-10 at the end of the half, so we felt like we were in control the whole game. We played tough [defense], which led to some easy buckets on offense,” said Daggett about the team’s performance. Daggett is the team’s leading scorer this season, averaging 17 points per game.

Strong performances by Daggett and Sweet were complimented by junior Zack Mathis who added 11 points, and Junior Josh Polce who dished out six assists.

“We started out fast, and hit shots early,” said Mathis, who scored all of his 11 points in the first half. “[We] played very good defense in the first quarter, and just coasted the rest of the game.”

The Lions also saw the return of junior Nate Berry who has been out all season with a torn meniscus. Berry was recently cleared to play and saw the court in the final minutes of last night’s victory, banking in a 3-point shot to proclaim his return.

“It [felt] good being able to help my teammates win,” said Berry. “[When] everyone can get playing time, and we can still come out with a win, it helps our team chemistry a lot.”

The Lions are looking to add more decisive wins like Tuesday’s as they reach the last few games of the regular season. They finish out the week with two home games on Thursday, and Friday and hope to run the table in the final stretch.
