Bocce Does Well at Districts, With Two Teams Advancing to States

On Monday January 30th, the Walkersville High School Unified Bocce Team went to the Frederick County districts meet, and was able to come away with two gold medals. The team fought hard against other schools like Middletown High School, Catoctin High School, and Thomas Johnson High School.

The meet was off to a great start with one of Walkersville’s teams already coming off with a win over TJ High School. Sadly another one of Walkersville’s teams lost a close game of 4-3 to Middletown High School, and was finished after the first round. When senior Uriah Hickman was asked if he thought the meet was going well he said “Yes, it’s going good. We lost the first one but we will go get this next one and then go to states!” When asked the same question, sophomore Nina Matthews replied, “Yes, because everybody is trying their best, and [they are] trying to go to states.” Junior Linsey Winpigler responded with, “I’m very happy because as I can see this is [one of the] best years we’ve [had] in bocce overall.”

While two of Walkersville’s teams were disqualified three of the other teams moved on to the next round which would determine if they went to states or not. “We are happy to say our other teams are [advancing] to the next level, and [trying] to beat the other teams. Go Lions!” said Hickman when asked for his response to most of Walkersville’s teams advancing. Winpigler responded to the same question with, “Last year I don’t believe any of the teams advanced as far as this, and as you can see everyone is very excited.” Everyone was very excited. With two of Walkersville’s teams advancing to states out of seven teams that Frederick County is sending, it is great odds for Walkersville High School.

Overall everyone had a great experience with bocce this year and everyone who was asked if they would come back next year responded with a definite yes.
