Walkersville is always about sports and right now a bunch of spring sports are practicing for their next game, but right now the Unified Track Team is preparing for states! Last year the Unified track team won states after a very wet track meet. But now the team is training harder than ever to win the gold again. Last week the team took the gold at county’s beating out Urbana and Middletown.
Some of the events that people enjoy competing in are the 100, 200, 400, and 800 meter dashes. The field events that people find just as exciting are The Long jump, the shot put, and the javelin. The Long jump is where an athlete runs at full speed and launches themselves into the air as far as they can. The Shot Put is where the athlete throws a steel ball as long and hard as possible, athletes also make sure they use momentum to gain an advantage. The final field event is the Javelin, it’s the same event played in the very first Olympics, the idea is to throw a spear-like item called a javelin as far as you can.
The States meet is this coming Wednesday May 15th. I went around at practice and in the halls to interview. I asked Gabe Miller, a member of unified track, if he was excited for states and he said Y’all already know it brother!” Ben Armogida said he was “siced” for the upcoming meet. Finally Sean Flegal said he was “excited for states and ready for my events!”
Students will be let out of school early to take a bus to the Special Olympics field. Everyone at Walkersville wishes them luck. Go Lions!
