The WHS Marching Band Scores Serious Points In First Competition
by Hannah Benson
The Walkersville Marching Lions had their first competition of the year. With promising results, it started the musicians on a high note for future competitions.
On September 16, 2017, the marching band traveled to Liberty High School. The musicians all had different experiences with their pre-show butterflies.
Junior Erin Kopit explains her experience before playing, “I figured we’d do really good. I was just really nervous when I dropped the mouthpiece of the piccolo, [it] fell out when I went on.” Kopit continues by explaining, “I had to retune it, so I was just really nervous right before.”
Senior Toni Aburto had a different experience stating, “I have been doing this since freshman year…I was just calm.” This being Aburto’s senior year, she commented, “I just felt really proud of the band. This is my last first competition, so I cried a little bit.”
The Marching Lions played wonderfully, and ended up getting a score of 75.92. Aburto pronounced, “[for] our first week competing, that’s really good!” Sophomore Meredith Byers stated, “I felt like we did really good, and there was still stuff we were working on.” “We got a better score than I thought,” freshman Kyra Toms commented.
This exciting competition is just the beginning. There are many more to come, along with lots of practicing. Many of the musicians are looking forward to future competitions and events. Kopit, Aburto, Byers, and Toms all agreed that they were looking forward to ACC’s, their marching band championship.
Kopit exclaimed, “I am excited for Musselman!” Musselman is another marching band competition the band will participate in this year. Aburto jumped in, “They have the best food!” Together the duo listed some of their favorite foods that are a part of the Musselman experience, “They have chicken tenders, cheese fries, apple cider, apple juice, apple cobbler.” The two girls were beaming as they explained the competition.
Overall, the 2017 Marching Lions were pleased with their first competition, and couldn’t wait to see what the year will hold.
