It was Pink Out last night in Walkersville as the Lions took on the Silver Oak Academy Rams, destroying them with a score of 61-6 for their 20th win in a row.
On the opening kick off, Jacob Wetzel runs the ball down the field dodging the cover team and gaining 65 yards, Two plays later it’s Tyler Gleason and a touchdown only 40 seconds into the game. The student section goes nuts, cheering and screaming; it settles down after Noah Sadler makes the extra point. “And it’s good!” screams the crowd as the ball fly through the air. 7-0 Lions are up.
Shortly after there are three turnovers in the span of about 2 minutes, an interception thrown by Silver Oak, then a strip fumble by the Lions, followed by a fumble by the Rams. Wetzel then scores a touchdown on a 15 yard run and another extra point is made by Sadler putting the Lions up 14-0.
Moments later the defense forces a punt which only goes 15 yards, putting us on the Rams’ 25 yard line. Then Tyler Gleason had a 25 yard scoring touchdown with another extra point made to make the score 21-0. Only nine minutes later Walkersville gets another touchdown to go up 28-0. Right before the end of the first quarter, Ethan Parrish scores on a fumble recovery putting the Lions up 35-0 after another Noah Sadler extra point. I talked to Shawn Haas who said “This was the first game I have ever gone to and it was pretty fun”
Walkersville picks up right where they left off in the first quarter when Gleason scores from 51 yards out making that his third for the night. With eight minutes remaining in the first half, the score is 42-0. Later, Ty Littleton scores on a 10 touchdown run leaving the Lions at 49-0 after yet another Sadler extra point. A few minutes later another fumble recovery by the Lions and Wetzel takes the opportunity to score and now 55-0 in the first half.
The second half starts with Walkersville scoring again as Nick Edwards runs it in from about 15 yards out, the score now at 61-0. Silver Oak decides they want to be on the scoreboard and reach the endzone with a 50 yard touchdown pass, but they miss the extra point, leaving the score at 61-6, the game is slow from then on and for the last three minutes we are in victory formation, the game ends with the final score being 61-6.
Jeremiah Sweet #9 spoke to me and told me “Last night as a team we played solid. We definitely have some things to work on. Offense played great and defense just needs a few adjustments before we get into the tougher part of our schedule.”
I asked about Walkersville possibly going to states again and Sweet stated “Right now we are a good team with the potential to be great. If we practice and continue to get better we could have another special season for sure!”
I asked Xavian Gordon, one of the fans from the student section, how she felt the game went last night, “I think we played really well, like we usually do. Really once the game started picking up we were making a lot of touchdowns”. She also stated “So far we’ve had a really good season and the boys have been working really hard to get back to States again”.
