Walkersville’s Got Talent, and It Shined On the Stage Thursday Night

WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

On Thursday March 8th, Walkersville held their second annual talent show.  Performers had been practicing for weeks to do their best- and it certainly paid off!

The first act contained Elijah Oliver singing “Dangerous Woman,” with Rachel Boyd on the piano. Avonleigh Broadhurst was up next with a beautiful rendition of “Beauty from Pain.”  Following Broadhurst was Ellie McMahon pointe dancing to “Marzipan.” Tori Piechowski sang “Raise a Little Hell.” Then, Deirdre Hall sang “Scarborough Affair” while Matthew Bennici picked the song on the guitar.  Lastly, Erika Long sang “Lost Boy” while playing the piano to accompany her.

At the beginning of intermission, the audience was informed of a Twitter poll.  The contestant that got the most votes on Twitter would win two free tickets to the upcoming Spring play- Cinderella.  It was later tweeted that Avonleigh Broadhurst won most mentioned.

During the intermission the silent auction took place. There were five baskets auctioned off: A movie night basket, a golf package (for two), two tickets to see Sawyer Brown at the Weinberg, a basket filled with Walkersville Lions apparel, and two tickets for a trip to New York. All of the proceeds from the silent auction and half of the proceeds from the ticket sales are going to English teacher Jessica Bowers and her family.

Act Two started with a bang with Music Director Alexander Loy playing a jazz ballad on the saxophone.  After Loy, Jordan Newman sang “Talking to the Moon.” He dedicated his performance to “those we have lost.”  Next came “What About Us,” sang by Deborah Afolabi. Then, Erin Kopit and Audrey McClatchie sang a duet of “Who Will Love Me As I Am.”  After, sisters Haleigh and Brianna Eyler sang “Go Rest High on the Mountain,” and finished strong while holding hands. Jessica Lair sang “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree” while the audience was clapping along.  Lastly, Rachel Boyd sang and played piano on a original piece called “Little Warrior.”

Once Boyd finished, she left the stage, and soon after all of the performers came back on.  It was announced that Rachel Boyd won third (received $10 Panera gift card), Matthew Bennici and Deirdre Hall won second (received a $15 Starbucks gift card), and Erin Kopit and Audrey McClatchie won first (received a $25 Chipotle gift card).  These results were determined by the judges: Eric Reickel, John Van Bloem, Alexander Loy, Mark Cronk, and Night DJ for WFRE Patrick Hanes. It was also announced that we were able to raise $1,003 for the Bowers family.

Sophomore Erika Long explained her time while performing.  “[I was] a little bit [nervous]. I’m singing with a piano, so it’s easier because I’m more control.  But, I just really love [to perform]. Afterwords I [think] ‘that was so cool.’”

Junior Erin Kopit commented on what it felt like to win. “It felt pretty cool.  It was exciting and strange, because I didn’t think we’d win. “

Sophomore Audrey McClatchie also discussed how she felt to win, “It was surprising but supporting because of how fun it was and I’m glad [I could participate] in this fun event!”

Overall, the Walkersville Got Talent  was a huge success. It’s an amazing event in which individuals can share their love of music, but also give support to the people they love, too.
