Progress on Blight?
The Town of Walkersville’s Burgess, Town Commissioners, Economic Development Commission, and Planning Commission quickly began discussions about blighted commercial properties over the past several weeks. Since GladeValley.net published articles highlighting the extent of problems on commercial properties in town, one property owner appears to be joining town officials in addressing some of the problems. Recently, Walkers Village Center’s long-vacant “Medical Center” had its windows blocked with craft paper. The units were filled with black mold and moisture clung to the windows and doors. Town of Walkersville Asks Economic Development Commission for Blight Solutions
During a regular meeting of the Town of Walkersville’s Burgess and Town Commissioners Wednesday evening, the issue of blight at commercial and residential properties arose. Town Commissioner Gary Baker brought forth a request from the Town’s Economic Development Commission (EDC). The EDC met last week and would like the Town of Walkersville to take action on the conditions of various properties around town. The commercial properties on the north side of MD 194 and directly across from Walkers Village Center has been planned for commercial development for a long time. At some point in time, the properties came to be called Walkers Village II (at least that’s the name chosen by two companies that own property along the highway). Walkersville continues to endure vacant commercial properties, and the problems associated with those properties. The concentration of the problems lies on the western end of Walkersville’s commercial districts. Some of these properties have sat vacant for decades.
