A Summary of Glade Valley Community Services in 2016
Glade Valley Community Services strives “to meet the needs of families and individuals in the Glade Valley area through the coordination of donations of time, talent, money and other resources.” The non-profit offers neighbors a great way to help neighbors.
Glade Valley Community Services released the following information and quotes from recipients of its services for 2016:
The Holiday Toy Shoppe provided toys, books, clothing and coats to 181 children and coats, books and gift cards to 71 teens.
“The Holiday Toy Shoppe and everyone that makes it possible have been a huge blessing to my family. We are truly grateful for everything.”
The Summer Outreach Walkersville Area Churches (SOWAC) provided hot lunches and activities every week day for 4 weeks this summer to an average of forty kids a day. A total of 755 lunches were served.
Tears well up in a grandmother’s eyes at the playground as she talks about the summer program: “This is what the kids need to feel a sense of community; be able to play and be kids.”
The Emergency Relief Fund provided $7115 to help 32 families experiencing emergency situations.
“My baby and I are forever grateful to GVCS… and the Community of Walkersville for operating a much needed non-profit organization for the less fortunate citizens of Walkersville.”
The Glade Valley Food Bank provided approximately 69,940 pounds of food for 1570 household visits to the Food Bank. Each visit provides a 7 – 10 day supply of food.
“I want to thank each member of your team at the FOOD BANK for volunteering to help Walkersville residents live a better life.”
The Back to School supplies distribution program provided the needed school supplies and a backpack to 141 students attending the Walkersville and the Walkersville feeder schools.
It can be very difficult for families to provide their children with the needed school supplies when they are having difficulty making ends meet every month.
The Community Thrift Shop sold approximately 1266 bags of low cost, gently used clothing ($2/bag), 190 coats, plus shoes and accessories.

A very caring, generous and supportive community made the programs listed above possible. The Glade Valley Community Services Board of Directors thanks everyone who supported GVCS in many different ways – volunteers, donors, churches, schools, businesses, organizations, individuals and the Town of Walkersville. “You all exemplify the GVCS mission, “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”. You have made a difference for many individuals and families in our community who are facing difficult situations.”
