Senior Mackenzie Akers Wins Second Place In Digital Photography Contest

by Taylor Diggs

Senior Mackenzie Akers of WHS was the second place winner for her digital photography art in the Women’s Civic Club Youth Art Competition. Akers received $75 and a certificate as her award. This award is highly thought of across the county, and students from all schools participated.

Akers photo was taken at Wonder Book of shelves of used and donated books.

All of the art submitted was displayed at Frederick Community College, where anyone was welcome to view. An awards ceremony took place afterwards and all of the winners were recognized. “It’s a really big honor because a lot of other artwork was submitted and it gives me a good feeling that my photo was recognized for everyone to see,” said Akers.

Youth Art is sponsored by the Women’s Civic Club where they provide monetary awards for middle and high school students. The members of the club raise the money that they provide to the first, second, third, and honorable mention winners. “Getting second place was not only cool because I was publically recognized, but I also won $75 that I didn’t know I would get,” said Akers.

Akers’ photography teacher, Christine Stovall, felt that the picture taken by Akers was a good suit for the competition. The unique lines and vibrant colors drew the judge’s attention and earned her the second place.“I thought I was just taking a picture for a project, but Mrs. Stovall thought it was really good and chose to submit it in the competition,” said Akers.

Stovall submitted four photos from her photography class into the competition. Stovall saw the artistic potential in Akers and is excited for her achievement.

“Mackenzie is a creative, smart young lady and has an innate artistic sense. She understands Photoshop and knows how to manipulate it,” said Stovall.

Akers artwork will now be submitted to the state level, where she will hope to win much more.
