McHenry Resident Urges Votes for Raskin in 8th Congressional District
Although I am not a resident of the 8th Congressional District in Maryland, I am writing to urge you and your readers to support Senator Jamie Raskin in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, April 26. I live in Garrett County in Western Maryland. if the fracking industry is allowed to operate in Maryland, it will first do so here.
There are many people in Western Maryland who do not want the pollution, heavy truck traffic, severe health problems, environmental and economic devastation that occurs wherever fracking takes place. Unfortunately, the Western Maryland delegation in the Maryland General Assembly supports the introduction of fracking in Maryland. They have been unresponsive to our concerns.
Residents of Western Maryland met with other members of the General Assembly to seek their help in providing some basic protections from the ravages of fracking. Even though we are not Senator Raskin’s constituents, he agreed to help us.
He along with Senator Bobby Zirkin introduced SB 361 which would have provided some basic economic and health protections to the residents of Western Maryland. Senator Raskin, working with other members of the Maryland Senate, was able to pass SB 361 out of the Senate with an overwhelming vote of 41-5.
Unfortunately, the Maryland House failed to allow a vote on the bill. I would hope that Democratic voters in the 8th Congressional district would support Jamie Raskin as a responsive, concerned and skillful legislator.
