Lions Win Close Homecoming Game

Walkersville Lions gave the community more to celebrate during Homecoming Week by defeating the previously undefeated Catoctin Cougars. The game was very exciting, and everyone was on the edge of their seats to the very end.

The first quarter saw the Cougars score a touchdown and extra point. They held that lead going into the second quarter.

The Lions turned things around during the second quarter. After scoring a touchdown and extra point, the Lions intercepted a pass on Catoctin’s next possession. That interception led to another touchdown by a 25-yard rush. A third touchdown was followed by a failed extra point attempt.

With about a minute left in the first half, Catoctin intercepted a pass. Within that last minute of the half, Walkersville intercepted a pass from Catoctin. At the close of the first half, Walkersville led Catoctin 20 – 7.

During Half-Time, Walkersville’s Homecoming Court was recognized and the Marching Lions performed a wonderful show with music, a color guard, and props.

The third quarter saw Catoctin’s Cougars dominate the grid iron with two touchdowns and extra points.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars scored again. The Lions responded with a touchdown and two-point conversion. The game was tied 28 – 28. A 40-yard pass by the Lions was recalled due to a penalty on the play with about a minute of play left. The game was tied as the regulation game came to a close.

Overtime rules gave each team a chance to score from the ten yard line. Catoctin failed to score a touchdown, but kicked a field goal giving them a three-point lead. The Lions answered with a 5-yard run by junior running back Mark Merica to score a touchdown, and winning the game 34 – 31.

Merica kept running in celebration around to his teammates on the sideline, and the crowd went wild with many rushing onto the track to celebrate.
