Walkersville Lions Varsity Football team was scheduled to play Governor Thomas Johnson High School’s Patriots Friday evening. For the third week in a row, the Patriots forfeited their varsity game.
TJ’s Varsity team is down to fourteen players, which their coach and athletic director deem too few players to play safely. With so few players, students play in positions with which they are not familiar. Players also do not get rest, because they play every single play. These challenges make players more susceptible to injuries.
Some parents of the Patriot Varsity Team attribute the roster issues to ineligibility, injuries, and players quitting after the team’s 0-49 loss to Middeltown Knights in its first game of the season. Parents also noted that JV players are not being moved up to varsity, because of inexperience.
Next week, Walkersville Lions (4-0) travel to Linganore High School to take on the Lancers (5-0).
