Liberty Mountain Resort Is a Winter Attraction with Many Activities to Enjoy
by MacKenzie Akers
Liberty Mountain Resort, also known as Ski Liberty, is very busy this time of year. From skiing and snowboarding down the Catoctin Mountains, to tubing with friends, Ski Liberty is a winter attraction that is not to be missed. Many students at Walkersville High make it a tradition to go with friends every year and sail down these snowy mountains.
Although many students only go there to snowboard or ski, others get groups together, or go with family and have fun at Liberty’s Boulder Ridge Snow Tubing area. Sophomore Ellivia Gray said “I’ve been snowboarding there with my friends before, but the tubing is a lot of fun too. Actually I am going tubing with my family in two weeks there and I’m really excited.”
There are many different slopes at Liberty for skiing and snowboarding. From the expert Black Diamonds to the Beginner Bunny slope, there is something there for everyone. Senior Madison Laquey said “I go snowboarding and I have been tubing at Liberty a couple of times. I think snowboarding is my favorite because there’s different slopes you can go on and that keeps it exciting. It hurts when you wipe out but I always keep going so I can get better.”
Doing any activity with friends tends to make the experience a lot more fun. Senior Megan Wells usually goes with friends whenever she goes skiing. When asked about the experience Wells said “Skiing there is really fun because you always run into a bunch of people from our school. It’s fun to plan big groups with everyone. I love that there is a ski resort close to here and not like three hours away.”
Junior Keegan Moriarty has been snowboarding for seven years. Moriarty described it as a “very cool hobby and it gives me a nice rush.” Moriarty continued by saying “Snowboarding is awesome if you’re good at it because you can go down the hard trails and they are exciting. Once you’re really good you can go to places like Colorado and I’ve been there twice — it’s amazing.”
Skiing and snowboarding can be really fun at times, but it can be dangerous. At Ski Liberty they urge the snowboarding customers to wear a helmet, but some decide against it. Senior Jacob Yingling said “I got a concussion last Thursday from snowboarding. I tried to do a 180 off a jump and ended up smacking my face on the ice. I should have been wearing a helmet. I still love snowboarding but I can’t do anything for two to three weeks because of it.”
Liberty Mountain Resort stays open year round, but the winter attractions close when the weather gets warmer. Make sure to check out some of these fun hobbies before all of the snow on the mountain melts!
