Indoor Track Team Prepares for the Home Stretch

WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

by Anna McClatchie

The indoor track team at Walkersville High School is starting to finish off the season. Running in the freezing cold each day after school is hard work, but it has paid off for these student athletes.

Sophomore track runner and pole vaulter Quinn McHood said, “Because indoor track is in the winter season, and we practice outside, it’s really cold and it’s kind of hard to work, but you have to learn to dress for the weather. The weather also conditions you for the inside conditions because you go from running outside in the freezing cold to running inside warm and ready to run. As  a distance runner it’s important to read your body, and analyze how you’re feeling and how much faster you can go. Indoor is also fun because the teams are smaller so you talk to everybody and don’t just stick to your two friends. It’s more social. It’s closer to a small one objective team sport than everyone running separate events. There’s more unity.”

Even though practices and meets can be hard, and with no experienced seniors on the team, the track runners continue to work hard to beat their own personal best.

Sophomore Autumn Parson said, “Indoor track is fun because you get to meet new people and bond with other people from different schools. It’s cool that you can race against your friends from different schools. I love the idea that it’s competitive between teams but at the same time you’re running for yourself and always working towards a new personal record.”

Sophomore Jacob Murray ran the 55 meter dash at the meet last weekend and said, “I think track is really fun because you get to bond with your teammates.”

Come and support the indoor track team this Friday January 22nd for the CMC Indoor Track and Field Championship at Hagerstown Community College.
