Indoor Track Athletes Set Personal Records In the County Championship Meet

WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

On January 19th, the Walkersville track team competed at counties. With this being the start of championship season, the athletes were excited, nervous, and anxious to compete. During this meet, each senior from each school was recognized for being part of the team, Autumn Parson, Jordan Johnson, Quinn Mchood, Wil Staab and Jared Gress.

“The meet went great, most shot put throwers got a [personal record] (PR). Autumn threw for her first time and got a few inches away from qualifying for states. I personally gained two seconds, but it was still my second best time. I think it went smoothly,” Junior Natalie Miller commented.

“It was a good meet. It ran a little long, but because it was senior night and the county championships there was an elevated feeling of team spirit,” junior Jackson Larimore said.

“The meet went very well. The whole team gave all they had and many of us PR’d, so I’m proud of everyone and can’t wait for the next meet” junior Johnny Bowersox says.

“Going into this meet was nerve racking. Knowing that all the schools in the county were going to be there. Walkersville had to perform like never before, both girls and boys JV and Varsity. Coach CK pulled the boys together and told us that our time is now and everyone, whether you throw shot, high jump or run had to PR. He wanted everyone to find their inner beast mode and leave it all out there. I told myself I will PR and that I will compete with heart and determination to be at the top. My first event was the 55m dash. I got second place in that heat with a time on 6.84 which is a PR from my original time of 6.97. This time qualified me for the 55m dash finals,” junior Alonso Hoes commented.

He continued, “Before that I ran my 300m fast and PR’d in that too with a time of 39.54. I would then go into finals surrounded by the fastest guys in the Frederick County so the stakes were high. There was two hearts for finals and I was in the second heat. It then came time to set up my blocks and everything around me slowed down. I blocked everything out and became one with the track. Soon as the gun fired I sprinted with everything I had to the finish line and the whole time all I was focused on was me. I then ran the 55m dash with a time on 6.82. We finished first in our heat for the 4 by 200 relay and fourth in the county. We PR’d with a time of 1:39,” Hoes commented after his amazing accomplishment on the track.

The Walkersville track team has had many accomplishments during the season. With the season coming to an end,  the team continues to improve everyday. We look forward to seeing what’s ahead for our track team.
