In case you didn’t know, here at Walkersville we don’t just have a school basketball team but we also have a girls U19 rec basketball team. The girls practice once a week and play a game on either Saturday or Sunday. Although that have gone 0-6 this season it is still a fun time for all the athletes on the team.

Senior Claire Kotchenreuther has been playing basketball ever since she was ten years old and is still continuing to play just at a lower level. Kotchenreuther stated “I played basketball for the JV and varsity team in middle school, then I played for the freshman team here at walkersville and then the jv team my sophomore year. I have now been playing rec basketball for two years; it is less of a commitment and more fun”. Kotchenreuther later mentioned, “ It is my senior year and I just want to have fun and not be stressed out by the amount of practice and games; balancing work and school is hard enough.”

Junior Kathleen Duffy stated “I have been playing basketball for about ten years now and I have always played rec teams within the area. I started playing for the school my freshman year and I played up until my sophomore year. I wanted to play rec this year because I wanted to focus more on my school work and playing rec is less of a commitment than the school team. We’ve had a good season so far we haven’t won many games but we always manage to have fun and I get a lot of playing time that I wouldn’t get with the school. I do miss the bus rides and the game type atmosphere of playing for the school and I was very close with my teammates but overall rec is a better fit for me.”

Senior Alexa Daye mentioned “I’ve been playing basketball for going on ten years, the first team I played on was the Frederick Kings (Frederick’s rec team), then I played rec in 6th grade and in 7th grade [that’s] when I started playing for the school team. I stopped playing for the school in 10th grade. I decided to play rec this year because I played last year and it’s very fun to be apart of. You don’t really worry about the wins and losses you just go out there and have fun and play. That’s what it’s all about for me, playing basketball and having fun while doing it. I feel really confident about this season, we haven’t won a game yet but the games were always really close score wise so I do see us winning a lot more this season compared to last season.”

“I do miss playing for the school a little because I miss playing with some of the girls that I grew up playing basketball with and I miss the bus rides because of how funny they always were, we all used to joke around and sing.”
