Freshman Football and Basketball

The Frederick County Board of Education (BOE) asked Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) to develop a budget-neutral way to continue offering 9th grade sports for the coming school year. FCPS will continue 9th grade sports (football and basketball only) in the 2015-16 school year under the following fee structure:

  • All student-athletes who participate in any sport will continue to pay the regular $90 athletic participation fee. (There has been no change to this fee.)
  • In addition, any school that chooses to field 3 football or basketball teams (Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity) will charge all freshmen playing football and/or basketball an additional $125 to participate. This additional freshmen football and basketball charge is separate from the $90 athletic participation fee and applies to all freshmen basketball and football players, regardless of the level of the team on which they play.
    • Student-athletes of schools that only field 2 football or basketball teams will not incur the additional freshmen sports fee.
    • Mills Custom Wood Floors

Parents may contact their school’s athletic director with questions.

This is a one-year transition plan, and FCPS will explore long-term options for 9th grade football and basketball such as working with organizations to convert these programs to club sports. FCPS continues to welcome ideas from parents and the community for the future. Please email suggestions or comments to FCPSMD@fcps.org.
