Residents are urged to place the bags filled with non-perishable food outside their doors on Saturday, November 14, 2015 by 9:00 a.m. for pickup.
As Glade Valley is a growing area, there are not enough Scouts to cover all neighborhoods. If the Scouts don’t leave bags in your neighborhood on November 7th, the Glade Valley Food Bank suggests filling a bag (collect from your neighbors too!) and delivering the food collected to the back parking lot of the Walkersville Town Hall, 21 W. Frederick Street, on November 14, 2015 between 9 a.m. and Noon. Volunteers will be sorting and boxing the food donations.
All food collected by the Scouts will be delivered to the Glade Valley Food Bank on November 14, 2015. The scouts, parents and volunteers will then sort, box and store the food on the empty shelves in the Food Bank.
Volunteers are needed on November 14, 2015 to work at the Food Bank for several hours or all day from 9am – 2pm, and especially from 11 am -1 pm.
Please support the Food Bank in this very important food drive which provides enough food to last many months. Last year the Scouts collected about 13,000 pounds of food. Let’s increase that by several thousand pounds this year!
The Food Bank is currently low on food, and as a result they are having to buy a lot of their food.
Most needed food items:
- Canned Pasta (spaghetti-O’s, etc.)
- Toilet Paper
- Canned Fruit
- Boxed Potatoes (mashed, scalloped, etc.)
- Peanut Butter
- Canned peas
- Baked Beans
At this time, they have enough soup, canned corn and green beans, but are very low on supplies of most other food items. Please check the “Use By” date on items you are taking out of your cupboards.
The need for food is growing. New families come to the Food Bank each week. In 2014, about 84,100 pounds of food were distributed, not including bread, bakery and produce.
The Dollar Tree store in Walkersville is sponsoring the food drive and donated hundreds of food items to the Food Bank last month.
Many local gardeners generously donated produce throughout the growing season.
Glade Valley Community Services thanks the many individuals, churches, schools, organizations and businesses that collect and donate food throughout the year. Each donation and each food drive is important. All donations help someone in our community who is hungry.
They also thank the many, many volunteers who donate so many hours to the Food Bank.
Special thanks to co-managers Donna Swanson and Brenda Haines, who volunteer so many hours each week.
Donations of food can be dropped off throughout the year at the Food Bank, lower level of Town Hall, 21 West Frederick St, in Walkersville on Mondays, 6:30 to 8:00 pm and Thursdays, 1:00 to 3:00 pm. New volunteers are welcome! Questions about volunteering or donating food items? Leave a message for Donna or Brenda at 301-845-4229.
