First Positive Test for COVID-19 in Frederick County Announced

County Executive Jan Gardner and Dr. Barbara Brookmyer, Health Officer jointly announced the first case of COVID-19 in Frederick in a press conference today. The Frederick County resident with COVID-19 is a woman in her 30s who did not travel abroad but had contact with people who recently traveled to areas where there was ongoing community transmission of COVID-19. She did not require hospitalization and is recovering at home. The Health Department will investigate this case with the help of the Maryland Department of Health. Communicable Disease nurses will identify contacts and advise them of any actions they should take. The Health Department will share information as soon as possible if risks to the general public are identified.

“This was expected and we have been preparing for this situation for many weeks,” announced Dr. Barbara Brookmyer. “Frederick County residents should stay home if they are sick or if they are at high risk. Everyone should practice social distancing techniques and prevention strategies like hand-washing and covering coughs and sneezes. Frederick County residents can call 866-411-6803 to reach our local 211 center with general questions about coronavirus or COVID19.”
