by Megan Allen

The Walkersville boys basketball team had its first round of playoffs on February 24th. The boys basketball team will move to the next round of playoffs while the Catoctin boys team is done for the season. Walkersville controlled Catoctin the whole game and the final score reflected it, 74-48.

The whole game the boys dominated the boards, Walkersville outrebounded Catoctin 50-22. Senior Kyle Daggett snagged nine rebounds and junior Jerimiah Sweet had the game high with 13 rebounds. Also juniors Josh Polce and Zack Mathis together got 14 rebounds.

Junior Zack Mathis said “We played good defense, moved the ball and rebounded well.” When asked what needs to be done for the next game, “If we continue to play good defense and rebound; I think we will have a good chance to keep winning” Mathis added.

Although the JV season is over, some of the boys got moved up to help the varsity go farther in the postseason. Sophomore Myles Roberts got moved up after playing a spectacular JV season. When asked how it was playing with varsity, “It is a much faster pace but it was a lot of fun. I have built a lot of friendships by sports and I was excited when I got moved up to play with some of them.” Roberts said.

The boys played hard the whole game and were in the lead the whole game. Not only was it one of their best rebounding game but they also played tough defense the whole game; they made Catoctin shoot from outside the arch where they weren’t comfortable and not get easy layups.

From Catoctin’s side, number 32 sophomore Christian Michael said “It was a tough game for us but I thought we played our hearts out even though the outcome wasn’t what we were hoping. It was really hard to get rebounds againsts all the tall guys on their team. They are a good team so I am happy with the way we played but of course there is always room to get better for next year.”

The boys will have their next playoff game on February 28th at Mountain Ridge High School at 6:30.
