WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

by Emma Lochner

Science teacher Erica Carbone is a full time mother and educator. She teaches chemistry at Walkersville High School within the science department. As of right now, she is pregnant and being a super teacher by dealing with two FCC classes that must end before she has her next child.

WHS Lion’s Pride: How did you become a science teacher?

Carbone: I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I remember. When I was in high school, I decided I wanted to teach high school biology. Once I got to college I realized that I liked Chemistry more than Biology, so I switched my major to Chemistry Education.

WHSLP: Where did you get your education?

Carbone: I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry Education from Shepherd University and my Master’s Degree in Chemical and Life Sciences from University of Maryland.

WHSLP: Have you always wanted to be a science teacher?

Carbone: I decided in middle school that I wanted to teach science. Before that, I wanted to teach whatever grade I was in at that time.

WHSLP: What is your favorite subject to teach?

Carbone: I love teaching Chemistry, but I am having a lot of fun teaching the new ninth grade Earth Science course as well.

WHSLP: What is your favorite teaching memory?

Carbone: I love watching the students’ reactions when we do the thermite reaction in Chemistry. This reaction produces a big explosion that excites most students about Chemistry.

WHSLP: How long have you worked at WHS?

Carbone: I am in my seventh year of teaching at WHS.

WHSLP: Is it hard to teach whilst being pregnant?

Carbone: It’s not necessarily hard, but it is exhausting to work full-time and chase around my two year old daughter, all while pregnant.

WHSLP: What do you like about WHS?

Carbone: I love the feeling of family at WHS. There is so much school pride here from the students and faculty . I also love working with the Science department; they are truly the best that there is!

Carbone is loved by faculty and students. Senior Michael Snizek said “[Mrs. Carbone is] fun, hip, chill, cool, and a rockin’ teacher. One of the best teachers in the school — anybody who has her should be happy.”

Carbone loves interaction with her students, especially if a class is one who talks to her, Carbone shows a fun side that makes students laugh. Carbone is also the Key Club advisor, being active within the high school outside of just teaching.

Senior Brayden Shorrow said, “I like that she really believes in her students and doesn’t put them down for getting a bad grade, but instead helps them. She also explains the work thoroughly so you can understand.”
