Oscar de la Renta, Famed Designer, Dies at Age 82
WHS Lions Pride Original Story:
He was the man who could make the dress of every girl’s dreams. He died on October 20 at the age of 82. His wife, Annette de la Renta, confirmed the cause to be complications from cancer. Oscar de la Renta was diagnosed with the illness in 2006.
Even as he fought with cancer for almost eight years, he continued to work diligently. His company grew to $150 million in sales, increasing 50 percent.
With two Council of Fashion Designers Designer of the Year Awards, a CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award, and two COTY Awards, the designer was an icon and staple of red carpets and weddings. Socialites, celebrities, and even four first ladies flaunted his gowns. Most recently, Amal Alamuddin, now Mrs. George Clooney, wore a dress designed by the famed man for her wedding.
An outpouring of sympathy can be found on Twitter in regards to de la Renta’s death. Anna Wintour, Vogue’s Editor-in-chief, and Andre Leon Talley, contributing editor to Vogue, both wrote eulogies in his honor. Taylor Swift, Larry King, Karlie Kloss, and Joan Smalls are among some of the celebrities and models who have tweeted their condolences. Major fashion brands have also taken part: Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Kenneth Cole, and Marc Jacobs.
The reactions speak for themselves. Oscar de la Renta will be greatly missed.
