National Honor Society Sponsoring Their Annual Food Drive to Help Local Families

The National Honor Society (NHS) is doing a food drive fundraiser to collect canned non-perishable food items for the Thanksgiving holiday for students and their families who are in need at WHS. “We’ve been doing it [the food drive] for at least a decade since I’ve been here [Walkersville High School]. We do it for 25 families with students in this school that have been identified as in-need. It begins November 14th and goes until the 18th of November. And this year we are offering a pajama day the day before Thanksgiving break if we reach 500 items,” stated advisor Jamie Skena.

Many students are excited to help out especially since it will help students who attend Walkersville High School. “I think it’s exciting to help so many families in the school especially around Thanksgiving time,” said senior Chara Roberts. The National Honor Society also does blood drives for the Red Cross. “It’s a good cause that shows our school cares about the students and their families,” said sophomore Lauren Rafferty.

NHS is always looking to help out in any way they can by providing opportunities for students to help out in the community. “It’s really cool that the National Honor Society is doing the food drive to help people that actually go to our school especially around the holidays,” said sophomore Claire Lynch.

They are accepting non-perishable items such as instant mashed potatoes, canned vegetables, and stuffing mix to help give in-need families at our school a great Thanksgiving dinner. The food drive is a great reminder to be thankful for what you have. Hopefully the students and teachers at Walkersville High School will help us meet the goal of 500 items or more. “The food drive will let us come together as a community to help the people who really need it which I think is really great,” said sophomore Alexys Malone.
