Margaret Heflin
Margaret Dorothy Xander Heflin, 92, passed from this life on June 27, 2017, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was born in Washington, DC on March 2, 1925, daughter of William and Margaret (Neimann) Xander. She lived her early years in Glenmont, MD and became a bride at 16 to her husband, Edgar W. Heflin in 1941. After 16 years farming in Sandy Spring, MD, they moved to a larger farm in Woodsboro, MD in 1957. She was an active farmer’s wife and enjoyed working by her husband’s side on whatever needed to be done. By 1966, they had 6 children to help with the farm work through the years.
Margaret enjoyed playing cards with friends, having big dinners/picnics for friends and family, gardening and enjoyed travels to many states, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, and Holland to name a few. She and Edgar also enjoyed staying during the winter months in their condo in St. Petersburg, Florida. Margaret enjoyed cooking, decorating cakes, bowling and spending time with friends and family. She will always be remembered for her delicious cinnamon buns. Margaret and Edgar had 66 wonderful years together before Edgar passed in 2007.
She is survived by daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Elgin of Rocky Ridge, MD, Joan Lapera (Marty) of Walkersville, MD, Juanita (Greg) Pfister of Ladiesburg, MD; sons, E. Alan (Bonnie) Heflin and John “Jack” Heflin, both of Woodsboro and daughter-in-law Kenda Heflin of Woodsboro, MD. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She is the last of her immediate family, having been predeceased by sister Anna Xander Gunnell and brothers, William, Albert, Christian, Victor and Robert Xander.
She was also predeceased by her son Phillip Heflin; son-in-law James Elgin, daughter in law, Anna Heflin and twin great grandchildren, Colin and Mason Heflin.
A special thanks to Jean Angleberger for her loving care of both Margaret and Edgar through the years.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in Parklawn Memorial Park, Rockville, MD. There will be no pubic visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702. Arrangements are by Hartzler Funeral Home, Woodsboro, MD.
