Many students currently in Walkersville High were lucky enough to meet and learn from Susan Baltic, one of Walkersville Middle School’s art teachers. Unfortunately, our beloved teacher was diagnosed with bladder cancer, so students are working together to create a mural in her honor.

“We’re hoping to make one for her and one to put in the middle school,” said WHS art teacher Susan Maseth. Maseth added, “We’re planning to mount it in all different media on masonite, and everyone who participates is going to make personal little squares.” Maseth made it clear that Baltic is an important figure in the community; she stated that, “She has had many of our current students and done so much for Walkersville and our community. This mural is in honor of her and all she’s done for us in her 20 years working at Walkersville.”

“[Baltic is] very encouraging, really enthusiastic, and she was [always] happy no matter what issues she was having. In middle school she always worked with us to make the sets for the plays, and she was always happy to help out and worked in such a creative way,” said senior Jessie Kaczor. Kaczor added, “I wouldn’t be as advanced in art as I currently am without her.” Fellow senior Kasey Shawver said “I loved how she gave us so much freedom in projects. She really opened us up to the creative process.”

“[Baltic] was my cooperating teacher; she taught me how to teach, and we became very good friends,” commented WHS art teacher Christine Stovall. Stovall added, “She was a very upbeat, friendly, outgoing person. Her presence made people feel good. She has friends in so many places, whether it’s students, church, or other colleagues; she’s cared for by many people.” Stovall added that she prays for her everyday.

“I loved the pig market and the Baltic Pawlers cause it always made the class more fun,” said senior Jade Joseph. Joseph added, “Mrs. Baltic helped me with certain skills and techniques I still use in my art now.” Fellow senior Denae Hurt added, “I loved her enthusiasm for animals; it made her a really unique teacher. She was also really patient, kind, and just an all around good person and good teacher.”

“I had Mrs. Baltic in middle school, and there were seven kids in our class. It was her first year teaching there and our class was outside in a portable with no sinks,” Art teacher Amy Graunke remarked with a laugh. “Mrs. Baltic helped me learn to never settle for good enough.”

With the squares for the mural being due on Friday, January 6th, any and all contributions are welcome for the forever loved Walkersville teacher.
