WHS Students Nervous, Excited and Confident About the 2016 School Year

Goodbye sleepless nights and restful days, hello to another school year! Don’t panic though! It is going to be a spectacular year. With excellent sports teams, wonderful entertainment options, a plethora of clubs and extracurricular activities, and fantastic people to meet; there is an endless array of enticing factors at Walkersville High School.
As we welcome the freshman into unknown territory, we wave goodbye to rising seniors. From alumni Noah Stitely, I was told to enjoy this upcoming year. College searching does not have to be a snooze and it does not have to be stressful as long as you remain organized and diligent. This chapter in senior’s lives is closing and opening to a vibrant new, exciting one.
Freshmen should abide by the same advice: enjoy your school year. I can recall being a teeny tiny freshman scared out of my wits of the older, massive, and frightening slew of grades. Despite my worries of being eaten or trampled, neither event happened. It took me a short span of time to realize that the other grades were not anything to be intimidated by.
I was not the only one who felt nervous. Freshman Hannah Benson said, “To prepare I mapped out my schedule. I also asked my brother some basic questions but I am still plenty nervous.” This anxiety is not only entrenching the freshmen. Juniors, sophomores, and seniors are worried for their own reasons. Change is always difficult especially with the wonderful invention of Netflix and popcorn to keep you company over the summer.
In a more positive spirit, Lizzy Bonilla, a freshman, expressed feeling “confident” as she braved the new high school hallways. What did she do to relieve all of this stress? “I went shopping. I did a lot of shopping!” she said. In asking any grade what they were most excited about for this year, they commented on the sports, but the freshmen were the most thrilled by the new opportunities offered for sports. Bonilla, for example, is excited for lacrosse, or as Nick Edwards said “lax!”
The spirit of the day has been intense and there is no avoiding that fact. Everyone is on their own rollercoaster of emotions. Today, luckily, will not set a precedent for the remainder of the school year. Once everyone regains their footing, it will be a smooth ride with a few bumps along the way but nothing that we cannot handle. Look at the bright side, of the 36 weeks that we must attend school we only have 19 full weeks!
