Junior Class Club Popcorn Fundraiser for Prom
What are upperclassmen looking forward to most for the rest of the school year?
One fifth of surveyed WHS upperclassmen said prom (other answers included spring sports, finishing the ap exams, and graduation). From Mean Girls to Grease, prom is the epitome of the high school experience. The Junior Class Club is getting ready for this year’s prom by starting a popcorn fundraiser!
The junior class usually plans all of the details prom, as a “thank you” to the graduating seniors above them. All throughout high school, the class clubs raise money for their junior year, to spend on prom planning. But, this money usually isn’t enough. Prom costs lots of money, adding up to hundreds, or sometimes even thousands of dollars! By selling popcorn to those in the community, junior class club members are working to raise more money for prom.
“Buying popcorn and participating in the fundraiser helps defray the cost of prom for the juniors selling the items and also gives us the ability to buy nice things for the prom, like favors, food, and decorations with the money raised. We have to pay for the venue, the DJ, and the photo booth,” Career and Tech teacher Gina Stelma stated.
“I know it’s difficult selling things especially when students are involved in extracurricular activities that seek to raise money by fundraising. But without money, we would have to raise the cost of a prom ticket in order to afford those things mentioned before. I would hate to do that,” Stelma commented.
Members encourage others to purchase popcorn. “People should buy popcorn for the Junior Class Club because it’s going to help this year’s senior class have a spectacular last prom night,” shared junior Melody Hernandez.
“We do a lot of fundraising with Claire’s Gourmet and for that reason, they give us discounts which are very helpful when raising money,” Stelma commented. Also, all purchases can directly help students to get free prom tickets, discounts, or prizes! In total, buying popcorn not only helps with the prom planning, but future fundraising, and the price of tickets.

The Claire’s Gourmet website posted the following. “You will have an option to ship directly to you or ship to Walkersville High School. All purchases must be made by Wednesday, February 27th, with the delivery date soon to be announced. From savory flavors like Jalapeño or White Cheddar, or sweet options like Buttery Caramel and Cinnamon Toast, there are choices for everyone!
All bought products will support the WHS students going to prom. The junior class club members have been working hard, but need this final fundraiser to prepare for prom 2019! From balloons to the prom favors, the popcorn fundraiser is helping make this prom one to remember.
