Sheriff’s Office Recognizes Deputies for Using Narcan to Save Lives
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office recognized nine deputies for their life saving efforts in 2016. The Sheriff’s Office has over 170 deputies that are trained to administer Narcan. The following nine deputies were recently recognized for their life-saving efforts:
DFC Brian Woodward-Hobbs
On January 27, 2016, DFC Woodward-Hobbs was dispatched to a residence for a reported overdose. Upon arrival, he found a 28-year-old male lying on the kitchen floor unresponsive, while the victim’s wife performed CPR. He administered Narcan to the victim. When EMS arrived, the victim was breathing and had a pulse. The subject was transported to the hospital by EMS for further treatment. It was determined that the subject overdosed on a prescription opioid.
DFC Anthony Reggio
On February 12, 2016, DFC Reggio was dispatched to a local motel for a cardiac arrest. DFC Reggio entered the room and found a 35-year-old male lying on the floor, unresponsive with agonal respiration. DFC Reggio administered Narcan to the victim and within a few seconds the male opened his eyes. CDS paraphernalia was located in the room and it was suspected to be a Heroin overdose.
DFC Michael Sutton
On February 19, 2016, DFC Sutton was dispatched to a residence for a reported cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, he found a 21-year-old female unconscious on the floor. He found a faint pulse; however, she was pale, sweating, and had vomited on herself. Due to the victim’s history of heroin abuse, DFC Sutton administered Narcan. After he administered the Narcan, EMS personnel arrived, placed oxygen on the victim and she opened her eyes. The victim admitted that she used Heroin prior to DFC Sutton’s arrival.
Deputy Robert Eyler & DFC Miller Yackovich
On March 25, 2016, Deputy Eyler and DFC Yackovich were dispatched to a residence for an overdose. Upon arrival, they found a 31-year-old male slumped over in the bathroom, unresponsive and blue. They moved the victim to the hallway to assess his condition; he was not breathing and had only a faint pulse. DFC Yackovich began CPR while Deputy Eyler prepared his dose of Narcan. Narcan was administered and within 10-15 seconds, the victim was breathing and coughing. He was transported to the hospital by EMS. It was determined that he overdosed on Heroin.
DFC Justin Chudoba & DFC Anthony Blare
On April 6, 2016, DFC Chudoba and DFC Blare were dispatched to a local hotel/motel for a reported overdose. Upon arrival, they found a 25-year-old male lying on a bed, unconscious with a steady pulse and labored breathing. Narcan was administered and the deputies continued to monitor the victim until EMS arrived. It was determined that the victim overdosed on Heroin.
Corporal Amanda Ensor
On April 18, 2016, Cpl. Ensor was working on-duty security at the library when she was notifed that a female was unconscious on the bathroom floor. Cpl. Ensor found a 32-year-old female lying face down on the floor. The victim was not breathing and appeared to be turning blue. Narcan was administered and within a few seconds the subject opened her eyes. EMS transported her to the hospital. It was determined that the subject overdosed on Heroin.
Deputy Brett Welsh
On May 1, 2016, Deputy Welsh was dispatched to a local gas station for a welfare check. Upon arrival, he found a 30-year-old female in the passenger seat of a vehicle. Her face and lips were blue and she was sweating profusely. He noticed she had bodily fluids coming from her nose and mouth; she was unconscious, unresponsive with a faint pulse. He administered his Narcan just before EMS personnel arrived on the scene. EMS administered two additional doses of Narcan and transported the female to the hospital. Deputy Welsh went to the hospital and found the female coherent, responsive and cooperative. It was determined that the subject overdosed on Heroin.
