Reese and Montour Win Prizes for Creativity in Rethink Recycle Art Show

Walkersville’s own Cheyenne Reese and Parker Montour won first and second place for creativity in this years annual Rethink Recycle art show.

“There were 61 entries from 21 different high schools” said art teacher Susan Maseth. Out of the nine winning contestants Walkersville had two. Reese who won first place for creativity and Montour who won second.

Reese was happy for the outcome but expressed a level of regret over her decision to make her wolf sculpture. “I really liked it but I wish I went with my original idea, a soda can dragon.”

Montour said at the event “they had five judges and they asked you a few questions and examined your sculpture.” Your score depended upon how they evaluated your art. The awards were presented at 12:30 on the day of the event, November 30th.

“I love going; it’s a lot of fun. The lady who does the event does it really well.”  Montour said the best part of the event was “getting pizza afterwards.”

“I felt excited!” said first place winner for creativity Cheyenne Reese. It was a surprise to Reese who had no idea she was going to win. “I just noticed there was a lot of people by [my art], laughing at it.” Reese said that her favorite piece of art from the show, besides her own, was a “little panda” she thought was very cute.

This show was Cheyenne’s second, and the both times she brought home a trophy. Frederick County only had two schools at the event, Walkersville and Linganore. Yumi Hogan, the first lady of Maryland was also in attendance at the event and took a picture with all of the students participating.

A lot of attention was given to his years annual Rethink Recycle event and from what the students and teachers say, it was a great time. Hopefully next year the event will hold, and perhaps surpass the excitement of this years event and host an even larger group of artists from around Maryland.
