The Walkersville High School Varsity Baseball team responded well to a tough loss in their season opener, earning a 16-2 win over Frederick on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior shortstop Davis Kelley shared frustration, but a positive outlook when reflecting on the loss by the hands of a strong Linganore team. “It was a frustrating loss and not the way we wanted to start the season but it’s early and we will figure it out.”

It seemed that a night’s rest and a fresh start was all the Lions needed to figure it out. They rallied together, putting Tuesday’s loss behind them, and handed Frederick a 16-2 thrashing.

“It was good to get our first win after a rough start.  I think this game will put us on track for more wins in the upcoming season,” said junior outfielder/pitcher Jacob Wetzel, a standout player who added his own share of impressive plays, including two hits and four RBIs in an overall dominant display by the Lions.

“I think the game went pretty well as far as hitting and pitching;we didn’t field as well as we usually do, but it was a good bounce back game for us,” shared senior outfielder/pitcher Josh Clegg.

Senior Drew Carter connected for two hits for the Lions and junior Rowan Bennett brought two runners home with two RBIs.

Carter was pleased with the result but noted that the Lions had room for improvement, “It felt good to get the first win of the season but we have things we need to work on to be playing the level of baseball we are capable of.”

The Lions first win of the season is hopefully a prelude for many more to come. They look to find continued success as they prepare to face a strong Urbana team on Monday March 27th, 2017, in their first away game of the season.
